Dear Reader,
All educators are aware of the important role writing plays in a student’s academic success. There are college courses, professional development seminars, and endless articles and resources aimed at educating teachers on effective methods and strategies to teach writing to students in the general education classroom. However, with a rapidly increasing population of English language learners (ELLs) present in our public schools, it is now more important than ever to be equipped with strategies to assist these students as well. But what are the most effective strategies that can be used to teach writing and improve the writing of English language learners? I have created this website to answer this question. Here you will find information on the most effective ways to teach and differentiate lessons for ELLs so that improvement is visible in their writing.
Before beginning my research, I did what every good writer does—I focused my topic by deciding what specifically I wanted to explore about writing with English language learners. I developed 3 main questions that guided my research. First, I wanted to research the most effective strategies I can use to teach and enhance ELLs writing. I’ve learned about instructional strategies in the past, but few specifically for writing. Similarly, I wanted to learn more about the different ways to differentiate a writing lesson to accommodate ELLs in my class. I knew many English language learners need shorter assignments, more assistance, and more time to write, but what other methods are most beneficial? Last, I wanted like to research classroom activities that help to enhance the writing of ELLs. With these topics in mind, I began searching through library books and journal articles to find answers to these questions.
As we know, writing is a vital tool used throughout every subject area as well as every aspect of our daily lives. Because of this, educators must remain updated on the most effective ways to assist ELLs in acquiring the written English language. After extensive research, I have collected what I believe to be an assortment of valuable information for teachers of English language learners. I have shared my findings in hope of informing educators on effective ways to assist ELLs in the writing process. I hope this information leaves you feeling better prepared to successfully instruct ELLs. Thank you for taking time to browse my page. Enjoy!
Sincerely,
Stephanie Feliciano
